OUR SCIENCE

We’re gathering the world’s most accomplished minds in contraception to develop a new male contraceptive method we’ve named Plan A™.

NEXT’s Plan A™ Male Contraceptive System is being designed to utilize and deliver Vasalgel® (a proprietary hydrogel that is intended to stop the flow of sperm) into the vas deferens, the tubes that transport sperm.

Following occlusion, NEXT’s Plan A™ Reversal System is being designed to allow for Vasalgel® to be removed on-demand through a follow-up clinic visit to restore the previous flow of sperm for a patient.

The provided media on this page is a depiction of how the Plan A™ Occlusion and Reversal procedures are envisioned.  The Plan A™ Male Contraceptive System is currently investigational, so no claims of safety or effectiveness are meant to be conveyed by this video. It is provided only to help explain and illustrate the goals for Plan A™.

  • Plan A™ is in development as a male contraceptive system that utilizes Vasalgel®, a proprietary hydrogel that is intended to stop the flow of sperm through the vas deferens. It is designed to be administered in a quick, outpatient procedure to deliver the hydrogel into the vas deferens where it would act as a flexible filter to prevent sperm from being present in the ejaculate of men to prevent pregnancy. Plan A™ is also being designed as a reversible method of contraception.

  • Since Plan A™ is currently investigational, it will only be available through clinical trial participation until it receives the necessary marketing authorization to be distributed commercially.

  • A vasectomy involves permanently cutting and sealing the vas deferens to prevent sperm from being released during ejaculation. The Plan A™ method uses Vasalgel® placed within the vas deferens to act as a flexible filter to prevent sperm from being released during ejaculation.

  • No. Plan A™ is being designed for male contraception, not STD protection. FDA-approved methods for STD protection would still need to be used to prevent sexually transmitted diseases.

  • The Vasalgel® hydrogel used in Plan A™ is designed to be long-acting. The standard duration will be determined through upcoming clinical testing.

  • RISUG and Vasagel® are both hydrogels with slight proprietary differences. RISUG is the precursor to Vasalgel® which was updated by the Parsemus Foundation through a rigorous effort to refine the hydrogel formulation for performance, consistency, and scalability. NEXT Life Sciences now holds the exclusive license for the Vasalgel® formulation and is using it in Plan A™.
